What is HikeSafe?
HikeSafe is a self-hosted hiking safety application designed for solo hikers. It replaces the manual workflow of texting multiple people before and after a hike with an automated system that sends SMS and email notifications to your designated emergency contacts.
How It Works
- Before a hike: You create a hike plan with your intended route and expected return time. Your emergency contacts are automatically notified.
- During a hike: You can send check-in updates. Your contacts can view a live dashboard showing your status and location.
- After a hike: When you mark yourself as returned, your contacts are notified that you're safe.
- If overdue: If you haven't returned by your expected time, the system automatically alerts your emergency contacts.
SMS Messaging
HikeSafe sends SMS notifications to emergency contacts who have been added by a hiker and have opted in to receive notifications. Messages include hike departure alerts, check-in updates, safe return confirmations, and overdue alerts.
Recipients can opt out of SMS notifications at any time by replying STOP to any message or using the unsubscribe link included in each notification. To re-subscribe, reply START. Reply HELP for more information. Message and data rates may apply. Message frequency varies based on hike activity.
